There are plenty of romantic Nutcrackers around, with glamorous sugarplum fairies and wafting snowflakes in white tutus. But there’s only one Nutty Nutcracker, presented by Ballet Theatre of Ohio (which is also offering performances of a “serious” Nutcracker) and they do it only once every five years.
It’s a send-up of all the familiar (and beloved) clichés, such as the holiday party where Clara gets her gift nutcracker, the battle between the mice and toy soldiers, and Clara and her Prince being whisked away to watch the colorful second act dances. Like the serious Nutcracker, it takes place at the Akron Civic Theatre, but got one performance only.
