It’s that time of the year again: time to get your daughter/granddaughter/niece gussied up in a velvet dress, patent leather shoes and hair bows and take her out to see The Nutcracker. The Tchaikovsky-scored ballet, with its first act Christmas party, war between oversized mice and toy soldiers, and the romantic dance of the snowflakes, and its second act series of colorful dances of which the Sugarplum Fairy’s is the best known, is a Christmas staple that keeps little girls on the edge of their seats dreaming of being ballerinas. Kids also love the show because it features kids in stage in several different roles.

First out of the gate (among several performances in the area) is the Ballet Theatre of Ohio’s version, which has six performances at the Akron Civic Theatre, four of them kid-friendly matinees. The company has been performing the work at the Akron Civic for 30 years so by now they’re a well-oiled machine, presenting highly professional and visual stunning performances.
