Once upon a time there were children’s books and adult books. Boys read books about sports heroes and explorers while girls got books about first dates and proms. By the time you were 13, you read grown-up books.
Then came the so-called “young adult,” or “YA” category, usually stories about young people facing difficult and challenging situations, aimed at high school age readers. While earlier books (especially for girls) usually featured situations no more threatening than being snubbed by one’s best friend due to a misunderstanding, the new books dealt with drugs, abuse, rape and death; others place young people in fantasy and science-fiction scenarios. And many are read by adults as well as teens.
If YA fiction is your cup of tea, come down to the Cleveland Public Library’s downtown branch for Cleveland Reads Young Adult Book Festival. The theme is “Beyond Our Borders: Highlighting the Beauty of Our Diverse Communities,” and its goal is to encourage a love of reading, whatever you choose to read. The event will feature talks by authors from across the country, panel discussions and other event.
It’s free but registration is required. Go here.
