Heights Art Show Draws Inspiration from the “Rust Belt”

Fri 1/14-Sun 3/13

Heights Arts’ first show of the year in its gallery is titled Rust and yes, that’s a reference to the Rust Belt. It features work by artists inspired in some way by the “left behind” relics of the once-flourishing industrial region around the Great Lakes. Some use its actual debris to create their work, while others, such as photographers, painters and printmakers, mine it for a source of imagery. And ceramicists and glassmakers build on the artisanal traditions that are part of the region as well.

“This exhibition embodies an esthetic of reuse and reclamation that celebrates the Rust Belt’s layers of character—the muscularity, the refinement, the resilience, the patina of age, and the energy of reinvention,” says the exhibit statement by curator Sharon Grossman.

Alas, there’s no in-person opening. But there will be a virtual opening which will go up online Friday January 14 @ 7pm. And the show will be on view through Sunday March 13, so you’ll have plenty of time to stop by the gallery and see it at your leisure. It’s open 1-7pm Monday, Thursday and Friday; 11am-8pm Saturday; and noon-5pm Sunday. Masks are required!
