After a long weekend of rest, the Western Reserve Historical Society’s Cleveland History Center reopens on Tuesday December 28 and remains open for visitors through Friday December 31 with limited 10am-4pm hours — except on Thursday December 30 when it will be open until 8pm.
So that might be a good day to take the family to check out its multitude off current exhibits tapping into a range of aspects of the city’s history. There’s the show devoted to Black Cleveland fashion designer Amanda Wicker; another devoted to the powerful political Stokes Brothers, Carl and Louis; one looking at women and politics; and the newly opened Honoring Our Past Masters: The Golden Age of Cleveland Art, 1900-1945.
There’s also a special holiday show featuring toys that dominated the Christmas lists of kids growing up in the 1960-80s. They include a Barbie and a Chrissy Doll and an original Cootie from the 60s; Star Wars action figures (still in high demand) and a Welcome Back Kotter figure with paper clothes from the 1970s, based on the popular TV show; and a Rubik’s Cube, a Cabbage Patch Kid and vintage video games from the 80s. There’s a display of Cleveland-designed toys, including such American Greetings characters as Holly Hobbie and Strawberry Shortcake. Read more about the show here.
