Johannes Brahms is the preeminent composer of the 19th-century romantic period, known for his traditionally structured and highly melodic music that’s easy to enjoy. It’s no wonder he’s still one of the most performed composers. And of course his music is a staple of summertime orchestral concerts such as those performed by the Cleveland Orchestra at Blossom Music Center.
This week, they’ll be playing two pieces: Brahms’ lush, beloved and familiar Symphony No. 3 from 1883, which spawned the pop tune “Take My Love” recorded by Frank Sinatra, and his 1878 Violin Concerto. The latter will mark the Cleveland Orchestra debut of 38-year-old Tokyo-born violinist Sayaka Shoji, who lived and studied in Italy and Germany prior to launching a busy professional career that’s found her playing with orchestras all over the world.
There’ll be a familiar face on the podium: Jahja Ling, who served in conducting roles with the Cleveland Orchestra for two decades starting in 1984, and directed the Blossom Festival from 2000-2005.
