SPACES Opens Members’ Show & Exhibit Reflecting on the Stresses of 2020

Thu 1/28-Fri 3/19

SPACES in Ohio City opens two more shows this week, which will be available for viewing in their gallery by appointment.

Starting Thursday January 28, you can see Please Don’t Let It Be Too Close by SPACES’ virtual artist-in-residence, New York-based Alicia Grullón, which echoes a plea many of us were making prior to last year’s presidential election — and since then we’ve seen how urgent that plea was.

The artist interviewed people from around the Midwest and the Cleveland area about the presidential election and their time in quarantine as the basis for her installation/video looking at the impact of the election on people’s lives. It was all done virtually and shot in her home, combining film, music and theater-based techniques. It includes a groups of self-portraits called March to June: At Home With Essential Workers, which comprised an online exhibition at the Bronx Museum of Arts last year.

On Thursday January 28 @ noon-pm, SPACES’ executive director Tizziana Baldenbro will host a virtual conversion with Grullón and time-based artist Leo Selvaggio, whose show Apologize to America opened at SPACES last week. They’ll talk about their practices, the 2020 election, how their work might have been different if the election’s outcome had been different.

Then, starting Friday January 29, you can check out the 2021 Season Pass Members’ exhibition, featuring work by Lena Atomika, Leigh Brooklyn, Laura D’Alessandro, Eileen Dorsey, Dale A. Goode, Lauren Charlene Havel, Alex Heard, David F. Heatwole, Timothy Herron, George F. Kocar, Tessa Lebaron, Ashley Lynn, Barbara Martin, Samantha Schneider, Grace Summanen, and Chi-Irena Wong, chosen by guest juror David Ramsey, founder of Cleveland-based nonprofit Higher Art Life, which encourages community members, especially young people, to use art to improve their lives, and the Deep Roots Experience art gallery in the Central neighborhood.

Both shows run through Friday March 19.
