Teen Summer Theater Program Presents Two Pieces About Racism & Injustice

A previous season of STEP, obviously

Fri 8/7 @ 7PM

Cleveland Public Theatre’s long-running STEP (Student Theatre Enrichment Program) program has forged ahead despite the pandemic, although the presentation of the results of the teens’ creative efforts will be seen this year only online and not in area parks as usual. The program hires mostly low-income, inner-city kids ages 14-19, many without prior theater experience, to spend eight weeks creating, writing, producing and presenting a finished play, working under the guidance of CPT staff.

This year STEP is offering a double bill. The Trail of Black Degradation tells the (fictional) story of the rape and murder of a young Black girl that leads to the killing of a young Black male protestor by a white cop. Rage Against the Machine: Artist & Activist Shout Out! addresses how to respond when you’re oppressed, marginalized or not being heard and how the voiceless can find their voices. It’s described as “a powerful and transformational experience of what can take place when imaginations collide with modern day technology, self-expression, and personal creativity.”

The ensemble includes Angeles Cortes, Samone Cummings (who performed in Playwrights Local’s production of Objectively Reasonable: A Community Response to Shooting of Tamir Rice in 2016), Brian Currie, Da’Nita Goins, Ste-vee Lang, Azizah Muhammad, Shaniya Patterson, Angelo Sanford, Kierra Stover, Jayla Swanson, Moises “Antonio” Tuyas and Zhavaughn Twitty.

Free tickets are available from CPT with one per email address. Audience is limited to 100 and ticket “sales” close 8/7 @ 5pm.
