Cinematheque Celebrates Anniversary with Buster Keaton Film Set to Live Music

Sat 8/8 @ 7:30PM

The first-ever screening at the Cleveland Institute of Art Cinematheque took place on August 8, 1986. Many things have changed since then, including the Cinematheque’s newer and vastly superior Peter B. Lewis Theater at CIA’s Euclid Avenue headquarters.

The Cinematheque will be celebrating its 34th anniversary — virtually, of course, since that beautiful theater is currently closed. But it’s got a special treat for its supporters. It will be screening Buster Keaton’s 1923 debut film Three Ages, in which Keaton plays a hapless lover during three periods of history: the Stone Age, ancient Rome and America in the 20s. The Cinematheque hasn’t shown this film for nearly three decades. “The film’s multi-part structure, cross-cutting between stories, and flowerily worded intertitles spoof D.W. Griffith’s grand 1916 historical epic Intolerance,” they tell us.

But that’s not all! Pianist Ben Model, who specializes in providing accompaniment to silent films, will do so from his home on the east coast where the film will also be screening. You can watch and listen with any internet-connected device with a private link to Model’s YouTube channel. Cinematheque director John Ewing will introduce the one-time-only streaming event.

Tickets are $12 (Cinematheque members, students with CIA & CSU ID and those 25 and under are $9), available only at the Cinematheque website. Go here to make your reservation by 6pm day of the event.
