Social Justice Champion & Folksinger Charlie Mosbrook Hosts Charlie’s Open Mic

Mon 6/15 @ 8:30PM

Singer/songwriter/acoustic folk performer Charlie Mosbrook has been an important presence in the area music scene for almost 3 years. He won second place in the 2018 Woody Guthrie Folk Festival Songwriting Competition for his song “Remember Who We Are.”

In it, he sings,

“Remember who we are
As we come from near and far
Women marching in the streets
and bent kneed athletes
We are refuges and dreamers
The Immigrants you blame
We will come from near and far
Remember who we are…”

It couldn’t be more timely now. But that’s just Charlie and who he’s always been. “You’re there to lift spirits and pull people together in times of crisis,” says Mosbrook, describing how he see the role of a folk singer.

He again refers to Colin Kaepernick’s gesture in “Nothing But a Dream,” from his Remember Who We Are EP, saying,

“Took a knee to say he wasn’t proud
Despite the boos of protest from the crowd
And the man who swore that he’d defend our rights
Instead condemned the moment as a slight
And demanded that the boss’s levy fines

Against anyone who dared to speak their mind.”

Mosbrook is also known for the open mics he’s overseen at numerous area venues. And while some venues are starting to open and a few musicians are playing live concerts, for the time being, he’s playing it safe and hosting his Charlie’s open mic acoustic showcases every Monday at 8:30pm. On these shows, he features various guest musicians drawn from his wide circle of contacts, among them Shawn Brewster, Tracy Marie, Brent Kirby and Bethany Joy, who perform and discuss their music and careers. Join him and his guests here; the older shows are posted for listening.
