Akron’s Nightlife Cinema Sponsors “Fantastic Fungi”-Inspired Pop-Up Art Show

Through Sun 5/31

The 2019 film Fantastic Fungi has been making the rounds of art houses and film societies. It explores the mysteries of mushrooms and other fungi, what they are, the history and myths surrounding them, all the ways they’ve been used and could be used to drive physical, mental and spiritual health, their impact on the environment, and how they’ve been depicted in culture and the arts.

That last apparently triggered an idea for the folks at Akron’s Nightlight Cinema where the film is currently available for viewing and they’ll be participating in an online daylong discussion on Tuesday April 21 — Fungi Day — with their director, scientists, researchers and others.

But they’re also in the midst of sponsoring their Fantastic Fungi Fan Art Pop-Up Show. Anyone can submit one or more pieces of artwork inspired by the film or mushrooms in general. The pieces are being posted in an online gallery for viewing. So far, people have contributed photos, watercolors, pen & ink drawings, Pencil drawings, cyanotypes, and even an ink drawing on a doily.
