One doesn’t usually think of the ubiquitous chain restaurants that are all around us as poetic or inspiring. But Danny Caine, co-author of the new book El Dorado Freddy’s, uses these American landscape institutions as a springboard to reflection on cultural and political issues, alongside his versifying “reviews” of establishments such as Popeye’s, the Olive Garden and Cracker Barrel. Caine, who now lives in and owns a bookstore in Lawrence, Kansas, is a Cleveland native. The book also features photos by Tara Wray.

El Dorado Freddy’s is being published by Cleveland’s Belt Publishing, which hosts the series Belt U at the Happy Dog in Gordon Square. With the book coming out this week, Caine is the series guest.

It’s free and open to all. And you can enjoy the Happy Dog’s famous customizable hot dogs, which are not chain restaurant food.
