Male Vocal Group Chanticleer Brings Far East to Shaker Heights

The San Francisco-based vocal group Chanticleer features a dozen male voices performing a variety of music, including commissioned pieces, in themed programs. Formed in 1978, obviously the members have changed over the years, but the group continues to tour throughout the world (They’re make their New Zealand debut this year).

Their 2019-2020 season opens with a program called Trade Winds. In incorporates folk music from seagoing peoples of China and the Pacific Islands, blended with the group’s repertoire of early music and contemporary pieces and poetry. They’ll perform the program at Plymouth Church in Shaker Heights this week, with music by both secular and sacred composers such as Carlo Gesualdo da Venosa, Claudio Monteverdi, Edvard Grieg, Sir Hubert Parry and more.

Tickets are $40; $35 for seniors; $10 for full-time students and under 18. Reanissance music expert David Rothernberg, chair of the CWRU music department, will give a pre-concert lecture at 6:30pm.
