DANCECleveland’s Summer Dance Festival Offers Events for Dancers & the Community

Tue 7/23-Sat 8/10

DANCECleveland’s third annual summer dance festival, presented in partnership with the American Dance Festival (ADF), offers a plethora of activities for dancers, serious dance lovers and even those in the community who may be casual dance fans at best.

For the former, there are free classes and workshops. For non-dancers there are performances by two major dance companies, as well as local dance students.

And on Sat 7/27 — the National Day of Dance — the festival will take over Playhouse Square, opening up East 14th Street for a day of activities free of cars. Fourteen free community dance classes for all ages and skill levels, including Zumba, African drum and dance, social dances and a giant mega-barre class, will take place from 10am-4pm in the middle of the street, while dance students will perform inside the Allen Theatre @ 4:30 pm. The dance concludes with a silent disco part @ 9pm on the U.S. Bank Plaza — all free.

The day also features a ticketed performance by Philadelphia’s BalletX @ 7:30pm at the Ohio Theatre. A relatively new company, founded in 2005, the group will perform three works by contemporary choreographers: “Steep Drop, Euphoric,” a sophisticated piece by Nicolo Fonte which debuted earlier this year; the playful, hip-hop-style “Express” by Memphis’ Lil Buck and Mathew Neenan’s “The Last Glass.”

The festival will also present Cuba’s Malpaso at the Allen Theatre for two performances Sat 8/10 @ 3pm and 7:30pm.
