Thirty-five-year old artist Raúl de Nieves, whose first museum solo show Fina opens at the Transformer Station, is based in New York, but he was born and raised in Mexico.

And the site-specific installation he created for the Transformer Station draws on his heritage and cultural traditions, “considered through the lens of this moment in history,” we’re told. (Will there be a wall?). De Nieves’ practice of taking ordinary materials to create dazzling displays is also rooted in his culture: he learned traditional Latin American sewing and beadwork as a child and now uses them to create his art.

The work goes on display with a public reception Fri 2/1 @ 6-9pm and remains on view through Sun 4/28.
