CityMusic Cleveland has been working its mission of bringing free classical music out to greater Cleveland neighborhoods for 15th years now. And as it launches its 15th season it’s bringing Brahms to Lakewood, Willoughby Hills, Beachwood, Slavic Village and Collinwood.
The program features two pieces: Brahms’ Concerto for Violin and Cello in A minor, and his Symphony No. 2 in D major. The violin soloist is a familiar face to CityMusic audiences: Tessa Lark, a Kentucky-bred musician who combines classical training (the New England Conservatory and the Juilliard School) and performances with orchestras, with a love of Kentucky bluegrass and Appalachian folk music.
Her partner in the concerto, cellist Edward Arron, hails from the same general area — Cincinnati. Like Lark, he attended the Juilliard School and now teaches at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, while maintaining a packed performance schedule and serving as director of several concert series and festivals. He’s also a member of the Ehnes Quartet.
CityMusic’s music director Avner Dorman conducts the orchestra in five performances: at St. Jerome’s in Collinwood on Wednesday, The Temple-Tifereth Israel in Beachwood Thursday, St. Noel’s Church in Willoughby Hills Friday, the Shrine Church of St. Stanislaus in Slavic Village Saturday and Lakewood Congregational Church on Sunday.
No reservations are needed for these free performances.
