Yo-Yo Ma Plays the Complete Bach Cello Suites at Blossom Music Center

Sun 8/12 @ 7PM

Instead of an orchestra, there will be just one musician onstage at Blossom Music Center tonight. But what a musician!

Legendary cellist Yo-Yo Ma will have that vast stage all to himself as he fills the woods and hills surrounding the amphitheatre with J.S. Bach’s complete cello suite — all six of them, performed without intermission.

“Bach’s cello suites have been my constant musical companions,” he says on his website. “For almost six decades, they have given me sustenance, comfort, and joy during times of stress, celebration, and loss. What power does this music possess that even today, after three hundred years, it continues to help us navigate through troubled times?”

He began his journey with the music at the age of four, recording them for the first time when he was in his late 20s and recording them again recently, in his early 60s, as part of a project he calls Six Evolutions. Over a period of two years, he’ll play them on six continents in concert halls as well as offbeat locations. And while on tour, he’ll also host events to bring people together to address social issues (He’ll be part of one in Warren, Ohio, Monday evening).

Tickets starts at $35 for lawn seats.
