Akron Art Museum Looks for Community Input on How to Present Upcoming Show

Thu 7/19 @ 6-7PM

In October, the Akron Art Museum will be mounting a show of work by Jeff Donaldson called Dig, the first museum retrospective of his work which covers painting, printmaking and mixed media. Donaldson was one of the co-founders of the Chicago-based AfriCOBRA movement in 1968, which looked to reflect black culture, identity and political activism in its work (The work of another founder, Jarrell Wadsworth, is currently on display at Cleveland’s HEDGE Gallery).

To prepare for the exhibit and engage the community, the museum is hosting a meeting, free and open to all, to learn what programs and materials people might hope to see in conjunction with the exhibit.

Says Akron Art Museum director of education Alison Caplan, “From programming to label text and reading room materials, it is important that we include a community perspective in all the major exhibitions we host. Jeff Donaldson is of particular importance because the work deals with issues like social justice that are relevant on a local and national level today. We want to make sure that local voices are included in that conversation and further represented in the galleries.”
