More and more people are paying attention to what they eat. We’ve come a long way from the celebration of the wonders of fast food and heavily processed prepared foods such as TV dinners, to a place where it’s become run-of-the-mill for restaurants to tout their use of fresh, local, seasonal organic ingredients as a selling point. Know-your-producer farmers markets and CSAs have burgeoned and more people are growing their own as the dangers of factory-style farming have been exposed.

The 2014 documentary Food Patriots is part of the movement to educate more people about why Americans need to produce and consume food in a different way. It starts with a Midwestern mother whose son almost died from contaminated food — something we will likely be seeing a lot more of under the incoming president as food safety regulations are eliminated — and goes on to explore how anyone can get in on the fresh, local, organic trend and why they should — especially now.

The film will be screened at the Lakewood Public Library, sponsored by Lakewood’s LEAF Community, which hosts community gardens and a seasonal farmers market. It’s free.
