Many area Shakespeare fans enjoy the annual the Cleveland Shakespeare Festival, which presents a summer season of two plays taking place in a different outdoor location each evening. But these abridged versions staged in informal environments – bring your own blanket or chair! – are also the perfect introduction to the Bard.

CoolCleveland checked out the first production and talked to director Brian Pedaci about the play and the company’s mission.

Cleveland is glutted with markets and festivals but it doesn’t have anything else quite like Asiatown’s Night Markets, which launched last year. Their dusky aura so captivated Clevelanders that attendance quadrupled from the first one in June through the last in September.

Naturally they’re back, with a similar mix of local foods, artisans and performers of all types, including street performers who emerge from the crowd unexpectedly to thrill and amaze. John Benson talks to market coordinator Brendan Trewella about how the market came to be. Fri 6/24.

It turned 100 on June 7 (when it had celebratory activities going on as well) and has packed the final weekend in June with all sort of things to see and do: tours, talks, art making and music.

Highlights include a performance of a piece based on birdsong featuring musicians moving around the building’s atrium and second floor, and a temporary sound installation by Jeremy Bible. CMA’s Tom Welsh shares some of the details with CoolCleveland’s John Benson. Sat 6/25-Sun 6/26.

Maybe you don’t have the time or the money for a week on Hilton Head or a month on Martha’s Vineyard. But a bucolic one-day or weekend getaway may be less than an hour away, depending on where in the area you live.

CoolCleveland’s Claudia Taller has visited more than 80 Ohio wineries, and she gives us a tour of the offerings at some of these highly accessible establishments.

Robert Holcepl knows Cleveland. He’s lived in the city before its renaissance, and he knows how Clevelanders eat. They want their sausage.

That’s the reason for Picnic at the 5th Street Arcades in Downtown Cleveland. They only serve fresh, local meat, and have designed special large buns from Camelot Bakery created for the extra large Polish Boy (“Polish Man”) sausage they call the Big Kowalski and the half-pound Warsaw.

Picnic sources their cheese from Lake Erie Creamery, and they serve local Bertman Ball Park Mustard and Great Lakes Brewing Company Dortmunder Beer Mustard. The french fries are hand-cut and they offer picnic sides like baked beans, macaroni salad and potato salad, plus unusual toppings like poutine gravy, peanut butter and chimichurri. Picnic-Cle.com

* More on $15 an Hour If there were a moral component to economics we would not be having this discussion since the federal minimum wage would already be over $15 an hour if it had been tied to inflation years ago…
