Young New York-based trumpet player/composer John Raymond is definitely up and coming. He was the winner of the 2015 ASCAP Herb Alpert Young Jazz Composer award. He’s starting to get traction on the road, performing at important festivals. And he’s got a new album called Real Feels, which features himself on fluegelhorn, Gilad Hekselman on guitar and Colin Stranahan on drums playing a set of familiar, non-jazz tunes such as Woody Guthrie’s “This Land Is Your Land,” the Beatles “Blackbird” and Thom Yorke’s “Atoms for Peace,” and traditional tunes like “Scarborough Fair” and “Amazing Grace,” all given a loose, improvisational jazz treatment. It’s Raymond’s third release.
When he comes back to BluJazz Akron, he’ll have Hekselman and Stranahan with him to perform music from Real Feels. Admission is $12.
