Natalie Merchant made her name with 10,000 Maniacs, but it’s been a long time since she left that band in 1993 and embarked on a solo career with 1995’s Tigerlily. She was one of the earlier artists to walk away from the major label machine in 2001, following the release of her last album, Motherland, on Epic, when the burgeoning Internet allowed artists to target their specific fan base and not be dependent on the often-futile hope that the record label would commit resources to a release.

She interrupted her music career for seven years in the ’00s after her daughter was born but she’s back on track now, following up last year’s self-titled album with a new project called Paradise Is There: The New Tigerlily Recordings. It’s a two-pronged project. The album features newly recorded versions of the songs on her solo debut. The accompanying documentary film contains live performance and archival footage, and interviews with musicians, fans and friends about the impact the songs on Tigerlily have had.

The film will screen at the Cleveland Cinematheque is its beautiful new auditorium at the Cleveland institute of Art’s McCullough building. Admission is $9.
