You have your dog lovers and you have your cat lovers. And then you have your…. skunk lovers?
Yes, indeed. Skunks can be good pets, if you know what to expect and how to care for them. You can learn all about it from actual skunk owners at the 14th annual Skunkfest, taking place in North Ridgeville’s South Central Park.
There skunk owners will converge from all over with their pets to compete in a variety of competitions, including Skunkfest King and Queen, get information from speakers and fellow attendees, purchase skunk-related items and show off their skunks.
Don’t expect to see nothing but black stinkers with white stripes though. These are not wild skunks that have been housebroken but rather skunks bred to be tame. They come in a variety of colors from brown to gold to a creamy lavender-gray.
They’re also a mischievous handful, which is why there’s a skunk rescue and adoption center based in North Ridgeville called Skunkhaven. According to its founder Deb Cipriani who is one of Skunkfest’s organizers, people often get skunks because they want an unusual pet, but find they can’t handle the smart and energetic animal. Skunkfest is a great place to gather information if you’re wondering whether a skunk is for you.
And if skunks aren’t your thing, there will be other rescues there too. In the past, they’ve had ferret, dalmation, bait dog and Siamese cat rescues. There’ll be food and gift items for sale as well.
Admission is a donation of an item for the shelter such as a roll of paper towels, organic pasta or wild rice, or a natural-grain cereal.
