Tony Fortner worked at east side soul food restaurants Zanzibar on Shaker Square, the former Jezebel’s Bayou on nearby Larchmere Boulevard and the Angie’s Soul Food eateries. But while the east side is rife with soul food establishments, he noted there were none of the west side.
That’s why he opened Southern Café in Lakewood in early 2016. The casual joint features all the familiar southern comfort foods including fried green tomatoes, collard greens, catfish po’boys, mac & cheese, and smothered pork chops. It’s open for breakfast, lunch dinner and carryout.
