Because Summer 2020 will be like no other.
Summer Camps become Virtual Camps. At home. You can now cruise through the Zoo. From your car. Farmers markets will be more spaced out than ever before. There’s a guide to which restaurants are open and doing it safely. They’ve invented an immersive “prism concert” from inside and outside Finney Chapel.
You can still hike and bike and the few remaining drive-in movie theatres are staging a comeback. You can even pick up some starter tomato plants for your garden.
Just don’t think it’ll be like last year.
Summer’s coming. Use your imagination. Make it your own.
Many parents were probably looking forward to sending kids off to day camp after a long spring of home schooling. Alas, those days camps are mostly going virtual too. But there’s lots to keep the kids engaged: arts camps at Beck Center and Karamu House, science camps at Cleveland Museum of Natural History and Great Lakes Science Center. DANCECleveland has announced that its American Dance Festival in Cleveland (ADF in CLE) in July will move from Playhouse Square to your computer. And it has cancelled or postponed several previously announced shows in its 2020-2021 season. Read More
Cleveland Verses, a nonprofit started by local band The Modern Electric, has put out a call for area artists to submit their own versions of Bob Dylan songs to appear on a album to raise money for musicians and venue employees out of work due to the pandemic. Read More
SPACES recently awarded grants to 60 people in the visual arts community impacted by the pandemic. It’s now gotten additional funding and announced a second round, with applications accepted May 20-31 . Read More
Some of the individuals most vulnerable to COVID-19 are those in Ohio’s prisons who can’t practice social distancing or adequate disinfecting, endangering their lives and those who work there. Yet Governor DeWine has been reluctant to release more than a handful of the lowest level and least risky prisoners.
