Get yourself kitted out

We are duded up and ready to go as summer turns to fall and the arts world starts to gear up again. Artist Eileen Dorsey is collaborating with the CBG on a cool project about the health of our tree canopy, while CIM and CMNH join forces to bring live music to their new majestic Visitor Hall. It’s the last week to experience the Metroparks Zoo’s Asian Lantern Festival, and you can even ride through it on your bike!Put on your finest for the annual Drag Showcase at the Beachland, bang your head at 21 venues at the Kent Rocks festival, and get all interdisciplinary at the Transformer Station. Don’t get too spiffed up for Rid-All Farm’s FreshFest (or N. Ridgeville’s Skunkfest), but feel free to primp and preen for Alla Boara at BOP or Sarah Curry’s new work at HEDGE, or Bridgerton author Julia Quinn at the Maltz PAC.

Matt Fish is fully energized as he relaunches Melt Bar and Grilled, and Thomas Mulready of CoolCleveland caught up with him on the morning of his grand re-opening, ordered one of their new veggie burgers to go (on a bun!) and picked Matt’s expansive brain about his journey and his new adventure. Former judge and CoolCleveland columnist C. Ellen Connally offers words of advice for those planning to vote: be aware of the new restrictions that are in place, have a plan to vote, and be proactive. You may be all dressed up and ready to go, but this is not a dress rehearsal.

 VIDEO

It’s been 18 years since Matt Fish opened the first Melt Bar and Grilled in Lakewood before building a statewide juggernaut. Now he’s refocusing on his flagship restaurant

CoolCleveland’s Thomas Mulready checked in just before the doors reopened, ordered a new-to-the-menu veggie burger to go, and spent a few moments talking with Matt about his journey, his passions and his exciting new plans for the next vision of Melt.  Read more.

 ELECTIONS

The gerrymandered Republican supermajority has an agenda to discourage voting from potential Democratic voters such as people of color, young people and college students. With Ohio’s Secretary of State deviously working to make registering and voting more complicated and difficult, it’s important for good citizens to do the work to make sure you are able to vote on Tue 11/3 — or earlier.

The most important thing to do now is to check your voter registration, and if you are among those the SoS purged, re-register before October 7. We have complete information on what you need to do if you need to register, re-register or change your address. We also have information about ballot drop boxes and a new directive from the SoS making them harder to use, as well as how to and when to vote early in person. Whether you vote early or on Election Day, by mail or in person, just make sure you vote! Read more.

 ENVIRONMENT

Prominent Cleveland artist Eileen Dorsey has long been known for her distinctive paintings of forests thick with trees. But in recent years, she’s developed a more personal relationship with trees and a passion for restoring the now-depleted tree canopy that once earned Cleveland the nickname “The Forest City.”

Last year she joined the newly formed tree steward program in her Old Brooklyn neighborhood, and soon she was working in other neighborhoods as well, sharing her newly acquired expertise in tree planting. Her growing knowledge of how trees contribute to our health and how they are threatened fueled a new series of paintings called Neglect of the Urban Canopy, which goes on view at the Cleveland Botanical Garden Sun 9/15Read more.

 NEWS

Two University Circle neighbors, the Cleveland Museum of Natural History and the Cleveland Institute of Music, have created a program called Museum Melodies. Each Thursday and Friday at noon through November, CIM students, primarily pianists, will do hour-long concerts in CMNH’s new Visitor Hall. They’ll play a free hour of music on the museum’s Steinway concert grand for anyone who stops in the Hall (it’s free). Afterwards buy a ticket and go visit the otters at CMNH’s Perkins Wildlife Center. Read more.
