Most people, if they’re aware of Korean music at all, think about the ensembles of attractive, highly styled, rigorously trained young singer/dancers known as K-Pop. It’s unlikely they think of bluegrass.
But this uniquely American style of downhome music apparently has international appeal. Earlier this summer a group from Germany known as Johnny & the Yooahoos brought a Bavarian take on this Appalachian music style to Riverdog Barn. And now Country GongBang is offering a Korean twist at the Cleveland Museum of Art.
The ensemble performs the traditional music in both English and Korean (!) and have begun to received recognition in other countries, such as Japan, France and, yes, the U.S. where they received the International Bluegrass Music Association’s International Band Grant for 2024 to enable them to bring their musical coals to Newcastle, so to speak.
