Once again, it’s polka party time at the Slovenian SNPJ Farm out in Kirtland. And this week’s party is a tribute to one of Cleveland’s many legends of polka’s mid-20th-century “golden age.”
The Bob Kravos Orchestra will lead the tribute to guitar/banjo player Ron Sluga, who performed with many of the top artists in the polka scene. And that tribute will be packed with other legends familiar to Cleveland polka lovers: Canadian Polka King Walter Ostanek; Joey Miskulin, who launched his career (he’s now a successful Nashville studio player) as a teenager performing with the greatest polka artist of them all, Cleveland’s own Frankie Yankovic; and noted accordion player Jeff Pecon.
Sluga, who is turning 90 (Ostanek hit that milestone last year), also played with Yankovic, as well as Ostanek and Johnny Vadnal. He was inducted into the National Cleveland-style Polka Hall of Fame in 2005. He is still performing!
The party will feature four hours of dance music, along with spotlight performers. Dinner, sandwiches, Slovenian treats and drinks will be available starting at 1pm. Admission is $8 at the door; those under 18 are free.
