Slavic Village’s Village Farm farmers market is up and running. Each Monday @ 4-7pm, accessible fresh produce, live music and kids’ activities will transform Fleet Avenue at East 52nd Street.
The market’s official kick-off on Mon 6/4 — Village Feast — transformed E. 54th Street into a giant community meal and party for the third year.
Melissa Khoury and Penny Barend of Saucisson, a Slavic Village-based artisanal cured meat and sausage shop, take the lead each year.
Volunteers carried trays of food, placing them on long tables stretching down the block as Barend and Khoury worked to prepare this year’s meal: smoked pulled beef and chicken, meatloaf, kielbasa, pasta salad with spinach, pesto, peppers and broccoli, and green salad with red wine vinaigrette, hydroponic tomatoes and blue cheese.
Kids huddled on the curb with snow cones, played corn hole or tried out hula hoops. Jul Big Green played guitar. In no time, everyone was chatting about their homes, families, how long they’ve lived in the neighborhood. This community-building is, after all, the Feast’s goal.
In addition to the volunteers, more than a dozen businesses and organizations made the event possible, including Slavic Village Development, New Creation Farms, Premier Produce, Green City Growers, Key Impact, Indoor Gardens, The Bartley Family, Neighborhood Connections, Cleveland Neighborhood Progress, Globe Sewing Machine Co., Arcelor Mittal and Cleveland Central Catholic.
“We are excited to see this grow each year,” said Khoury, both she and Barend taking the time to point to the nearby community garden, which also contributed to another successful event.
