The dancers and drummers of Djapo Cultural Arts Institute are the regular openers and closers of Station Hope, the event in Ohio City put together by Cleveland Public Theatre, launching and invigorating an evening dedicated to the arts addressing issues of freedom and justice.
Now Cleveland Public Theatre will host them at its own theater on Saturday June 15 for Saniyalen Don: “Cleansed,” a Juneteenth Night of Unity, created and choreographed by Djapo Executive Artistic Director Talise Campbell with musical direction by percussionist Djembefola Weedie Braimah. It opens with a 7pm reception, followed at 8pm with a performance featuring a dance/music/drumming /poetry tour of the many cultures of the African continent and the diaspora, with Djapo dancers, community performers and international artists.
It’s part of a weekend of cultural creativity for the Djapo Institute, its 15th annual Africam Drum and Dance Fest. It’s hosting workshops all weekend at its home base at the Pivot Center, starting with an opening ceremony Friday June 14 Guest teaching artists from Mali, Haiti, Guinea, Senegal, Ghana, Ivory Coast and U.S. will be leading the workshops, which are open to everyone from little kids to “60 and wiser” seniors. The weekend also includes a panel discussion, marketplace and arts activities in collaboration with other Pivot residents such as Future Ink Graphics and the Cleveland Museum of Arts Community Center.
