While two national musicians unions held conferences in Cleveland, musicians from around the country as well as Cleveland gathered at Perk Plaza downtown as “Musicians Against Dictators,” to stand up for freedom, democracy and the American way. Union leaders including Cleveland Musicians Union Local 4 leader Lenny DiCosimo, spoke, while an ad hoc group of orchestra musicians played some numbers, including Beethoven’s “Ode to Joy” under the baton of Apollo’s Fire artistic director Jeannette Sorrell. Then Cleveland’s #1 folksinger Alex Bevan took the stage, joined by friends Charlie Wiener and Charlie Mosbrook to perform some “patriotic” favorites including “America the Beautiful,” “This Land Is Your Land” and “The Times They Are A-Changin’.”
