Akron U Theatre Students Tackle Play about Gender Relations Based on Ancient Greek Drama

Thu 10/25-Sat 10/27 & Thu 11/1-Sat 11/3 @ 7:30PM

Sun 10/28 & Sun 11/4 @ 2PM

Charles Mee’s 2000 play Big Love reaches back into ancient times to tell a very modern story — one that feels even more contemporary in 2018 than it did in 2000.

It’s based on the ancient Greek Aeschylus’ play The Suppliants, about 50 brides fleeing from the 50 grooms they’ve been betrothed to. In reinventing it, Mee brought out inherent themes of domestic violence, gender roles and even immigration as the brides flee their native country to avoid the grooms.

The play is being presented by the University of Akron Theatre with a cast of 15 students, directed by UA professor of theater James Slowiak. It takes place at the Sandefur Theatre in Guzzetta Hall this weekend and next weekend. Tickets are $10.
