We can all be thankful for the superwomen in our lives. Maybe we got to spend some quality time with them over the holidays. But around here we celebrate them every week.

Supermom CLE creator Suzanne Caraballo combines fitness, play dates and meet-ups for Cleveland moms, and her interview is featured in our CoolCLE PODCAST #15, ready for your listening pleasure. “Three Women and the Truth” features singer/songwriters Mary Gauthier, Eliza Gilkyson and Gretchen Peters in concert, while superstar founder/owner Nicole Brichacek and her staff at Gypsy Beans & Baking Company will celebrate the 12th anniversary of their opening day on Jan 2 with freebies and good cheer. Stop in and give her a hug for us.

Moms and dads and former kids alike are telling true-life stories about their childhoods, raising their own kids or just acting like kids at this month’s Keep Talking storytelling event. A gallery walk and talk at the Akron Art Museum looks at the work by women in the collection as well as a current special exhibit by Allison Zuckerman. CoolCLE PODCAST #15: Supermom CLE

A group of moms is reinventing the “mommy and me” concept by combining fitness, play dates and meet-ups under the name Supermom CLE. Creator Suzanne Caraballo joins us to talk about why she started the group and the variety of classes available to Cleveland moms. This family fitness program prides itself on its inclusive environment and supporting events like play dates, recipe swapping and social activities. And with the new year approaching, she talks about how the group will be rolling out a series of wellness & work/life balance sessions that will focus on everything from meal prep to developing a running routine.

We also highlight a number of events, including the book signing and music event at the Music Box Supper Club for Let’s Go! Benjamin Orr and the Cars with author Joe Milliken. Milliken came on the show in November to talk about the book and how Cleveland fueled Orr’s rise to stardom. Music from Vanity Crash features in this episode ahead of the band performing at two events about David Bowie’s life and musical career in January. And we have Akron’s experimental R&B quintet Bluelight, fusing improvisation with emotional and dynamic compositions with a track from its October release Home. You can see them live at the Musica in Akron on Fri 1/18.

Spotlight on Local

The week after New Year’s is the slowest week of the year. With many just wanting to stay home, the pickings are slim as far as activities go. Each year, the Grog Shop takes advantage of this time when not many bands are touring to showcase some of the best local talent, with 17 artists featured over four days – for free. The acts range from acoustic to very heavy, and feature both established performers such as OBNOX (pictured) and Brent Kirby, and artists you may not have heard of – yet.

Our reporter John Benson talks to Grog Shop general manager John Neely to get the scoop on who’s playing and gets his reaction to Death Cab for Cutie’s Ben Gabbard saying of the club’s john, “I’ve never seen a more disgusting bathroom in my life.” Don’t worry – he was talking about the OLD location, not the perfectly sanitary bathrooms in the current club. Thu 1/3-Sun 1/6.

Time to Create

Kids got cabin fever? Cleveland Heights’ Lake Erie Ink has the answer. Its Hot Cold Creative Play Day is an afternoon where kids can romp on their playground and then come indoors for creative art and writing activities and hot cocoa. Thu 1/3.

* The Akron Art Museum jumps right into the new year with art-making classes for kids ages 12 months to 10 years. Sign them up and dress them to get messy because these classes are very hands-on. Older kids get to fuel their imaginations with a walk through the galleries before going to the studio to create. Thu 1/3 & Sat 1/5.

The Beachland Ballroom is hosting a benefit for the nonprofit Cleveland Rocks: Past, Present and Future, dedicated to the late PD music writer Jane Scott. Swamp rockers Cats on Holiday provide the music. Sat 1/5

Want to hear people’s true-life stories about their childhoods, raising their own kids or just acting like kids? That’s the theme of this month’s Keep Talking storytelling event at the Happy Dog in Gordon Square, in which scheduled tale-spinners and pre-registered volunteers share their sagas.

* Gypsy Beans coffeeshop in Gordon Square celebrates its 12th anniversary.

* You’ve still got time to catch the Cleveland Botanical Garden’s annual holiday Glow show, on view through Sat 1/5.

* The toboggan chutes at Mill Stream Run – Ohio’s tallest and longest – have extended hours thorough Sat 1/5, open from noon-10:30pm.

The Cleveland Museum of Art’s Open Studios, which normally take place on Sunday, have a special Thursday session in the museum’s atrium during the winter break. They’re for all ages – kids, adults, families – and no registration is required. Just stop by!

Even in the winter, the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo is open seven days a week. And many of the animals, such as the polar bears and snow leopards (pictured), relish the cold weather And right now, there are adolescent snow leopard cubs! Best of all, on Mondays the zoo is free to Cuyahoga County residents.

* Summit Songwriters meeting at Stow’s 2 Girls Cafe gives writers the chance to share their new songs and works in progress and get feedback.
