Italian director and screenwriter Luchino Visconti (1906-1976) is probably best known in the U.S. for The Damned (1969) for which he got an Oscar nomination, and his Cannes Film Festival award-winning 1971 film Death in Venice, both starring Dirk Bogarde and featuring German protagonists. The former deals with Nazi collaborators; the second, based on a Thomas Mann novella, with a gay man’s silent, fatal obsession-at-a-distance with an attractive youth.
The Cleveland Institute of Art Cinematheque will add some chill to winter by showing Visconti films in January and February under the banner “Encore! The Operatic Films of Luchino Visconti.”
It kicks off with two screenings of Death in Venice Fri 1/4 and Sun 1/6 in a new 4K restoration. Admission is $12, $9 for Cinematheque members, those with CIA and CSU IDS and age 25 and under.
