Identity

Identity

Do we have an identity crisis? I certainly hope so. Mainstream opinion is that recent events such as landing the RNC and LeBron have created a new narrative. But our new identity has been well on its way for years, with a plethora of cool people and cool stuff going on. And now it’s time to take the dive.

So while our architects debate identityCLE, E. 185th Street is in revival, and CAN celebrates their 3rd year with a cornhole tourney. Vegan options abound, the West Side Market is open for tours, Veggie U. teaches kids to eat healthy, and the Akron Arts Expo combines food, wine and art.

You know, most people don’t remember 1969. To them, the burning river is just an excellent beer. Or a festival celebrating sustainability. Crisis? Yes. How to solve it? Dive in. –Thomas Mulready

ActiVacant Program Aims to Bring New Businesses to Collinwood Street

With the Waterloo Streetscape just weeks away from being finished (no, really!), Northeast Shores, the neighborhood development group, is looking a few blocks away to East 185th. While that commercial strip has attracted some cool businesses, it’s still got more vacancies than they’d like.

So they’ve launched ActiVacant, looking to recruit five new businesses that will add to the already existing mix. The chosen businesses will be given incentives and support to get up and running…

White House Official Hails CMSD
as a Model for The Country

A white house official, Alejandra Ceja, Executive Director of the White House Initiative on Educational Excellence for Hispanics, took a tour of Cleveland Metropolitan School District’s Thomas Jefferson International Newcomers Academy and was impressed. The Newcomers Academy is a K-12 school which helps students from other nations and Puerto Rico learn a new language and customs.

Executive Director Ceja was highly impressed that the school also works with parents, offering GED and citizenship classes. She said that the approach should be a model for other existing schools in areas where similar needs can be serviced.

Cleveland is steadily embracing a vegan lifestyle. Many restaurants now offer vegan options that were unheard of 10 years ago. The city is also full of entrepreneurial vegan businesses that, while lacking a brick-and-mortar store, offer amazing goods. We spotlight a few of them…

Burning River Fest
Promoting Sustainability

Since it opened in 1988, Great Lakes Brewing Company has constantly looked for new ways to be more sustainable and friendlier to the environment. Since 2001, it’s been sharing some of these ideas and practices with the public at its annual Burning River Festival.

What insensitive commentary! Let her find her way on her own terms without criticism — she has been through hell and deserves empathy and support….
Alice Jeresko

No, she violated her supposed wish to be anonymous by allowing her face to be plastered in the PD. I understand she’s confused, but the fact is, she actually craves to extend her 15 minutes of fame…
