VIDEO: Niki Gillota of Gypsy Beans
Opening 2nd Location in Lakewood

After almost six years as a pioneer at the corner of West 65th & Detroit, serving as an anchor of the Gordon Square Arts District, Niki Gillota is opening a second location on 11/1/12 in Lakewood as she takes over the Beck Cafe, attached to the Beck Center.

She’ll retain her baking operation in Detroit Shoreway with lunch, soup, salad, sandwiches, much of which she prepares personally. She considers herself very lucky, as her new baby celebrates his 8-week birthday and she counts her blessings for the wonderful community that supports her, and now she doubles down with the new Gypsy Beans in Lakewood. The emotions run high as Niki discusses her history on the Near West Side and her new venture.

When Marjorie Talalay and partner Nina Castelli Sundell created The New Gallery in 1968 a block or two west of the Euclid Avenue location of what has become MOCA Cleveland’s new museum, even their feverish imaginations might not have conceived a venue as edgy, disturbing and outrageous as this one.

Designed by Iranian architect Farshid Moussavi (in the pink layered dress in these photos), who must dream in four dimensions, the iconic four-story faceted gem on the high-traffic Triangle where Euclid meets Mayfield Road confounds easy comprehension and delivers intoxicating, vertiginous views from every angle, up down and sideways.

Dozens of bodies walking through the space helped to define the unparalleled “monumental” staircase, designed to be wandered up like an Italian hillside, perfect for art openings, special events and kids playing hide-and-seek. Partygoers commented that they looked forward to the time when all the art would be displayed, not realizing that work by an incredible 16 artists was on exhibit. Recognize yourself or a friend? The Bridges of Ashtabula County
Covered bridges & back roads

On the back roads of Ashtabula County, the pavement gives way to dirt road suddenly and inexplicably and you wonder what happened to the road as you start to bump along past lingering yellowed cornfields and vineyards.

Down the hill, by the river, a covered bridge regally stretches from one bank to the next, and it feels like you’re in yesteryear time…

Saint Maria…
Or, “A Hill Worth Dying On”

Well over a decade ago the State Board of Education fired a man who, by all accounts, was the best school principal in the Cleveland Municipal School District at the time.

The reason for his firing? Over 20 years prior he’d gotten into a shoving match with his then significant other, and, in spite of the woman attempting to drop the nebulous charge, the incident was classified as a domestic violence incident…
