Pushing

What keeps us moving forward? Our legendary work ethic? Our seasons that change before we have a chance to take them for granted? Our perennial position as a mid-sized city chasing the metropolises, and even our own history as one of the biggest and best of all time?

Whatever the affliction is, we’ve got it bad. The Maltz never stops reminding us that we can, and should, do better, with powerful exhibits like their current one on civil rights. No Exit has pushed the pocket of the avant-garde for a decade, and they’re not stopping. Glam punksters Vanity Crash land like aliens at the 5 O’Clock.

Politics always forces us to make tough decisions. Columnist C. Ellen Connally entertains with some presidential trivia, and BW hosts a face-off between conservative Gingrich and leftie Jones. We easily and enthusiastically endorse Hillary earlier than usual. Why? So we can spend the rest of our precious time pushing for what we believe. –Thomas Mulready

Are you registered to vote? Election Day is Tuesday November 8, and to vote in Ohio, you must register by Tuesday October 11. Contact your board of elections NOW to register, check to make sure your address is up to date and, if you haven’t voted recently, that you are still registered.

If there were any lingering doubts about Hillary Clinton’s qualifications to become the first female president of the United States they should have been completely laid to rest by her recent debate performance against her opponent. Her grasp of the issues, her demeanor, and above all, her comportment in the face of his demeaning and juvenile attempts to rattle her, clearly demonstrated…

It might not seem like a natural fit for the Maltz Museum of Jewish Heritage to host an exhibit of photos from the Civil Rights Movement of 50 years ago. But it’s in keeping with the museum’s mission of pushing back against bigotry and hate.

Nine photographers captured the turmoil of the Freedom Summer down South when student activists joined with black leaders to register voters. They’re hoping people take away the message that ordinary people can fight injustice and make change. Thu 9/29.

Coming off a torrid series of sold-out multi-media presentations on David Bowie and the history of Glam Rock, Cleveland’s favorite glam-punk superstars Vanity Crash settle in for a home stand at Lakewood’s 5 O’Clock Lounge this Sat 10/1 starting at 9:30PM, presenting their sizzling originals along with a few favorites.

Known as “a real bar for real people,” and founded in 1934 when Prohibition ended, the Five O’Clock “feels like the type of bar where punk or blues grew up.” The intimate concert stage encourages dancing and interaction between musicians & audiences, and is a favorite of indie & edgy music year round.

Rumors of an expanded Bowie presentation at the BOP STOP in January 2017 around his birth/death date are circulating. In them meantime, view their version of Moonage Daydream here, and catch them live this Sat 10/1.

This particular presidential election is driving some of us crazy with its unprecedented clash of the first woman major-party candidate ever and by far the least qualified in U.S. history.

For a little diversion, history buff C. Ellen Connally offers some fascinating trivia and little-known facts about past presidents. What’s the most common presidential name? What did they do before getting elected? She’ll tell you!

Cle artist Loren Naji rolled out of town in early September, towing his large hollow spherical sculpture EMOH, constructed from pieces of demolished homes. His goal: to live in it for a month to draw attention to homelessness and try for the $200,000 Grand Rapids ArtPrize..

Now camped out in downtown Grand Rapids, he’s attracted lots of attention. A local TV station has installed a cam inside the globe and he’s gotten write-ups in USA Today and the San Francisco Chronicle website. We’ve got links!

Many classical music fans are content with repertoire staples. But No EXIT New Music Ensemble has spent almost a decade exploring classical music’s more avant-garde pockets.

NO EXIT has a concert-heavy season planned, kicking off this week with evenings of new works at CSU and SPACES. Artistic director Tim Beyer tells our John Benson what they’ve got in store. Thu 9/29, Sat 10/1, Sat 10/8.

Once a month the Akron Art Museum holds its Kids Studio to give children ages 7-12 the opportunity to explore different media and artistic processes. This month, they’ll work around the concept of “Portal to Space: Weave a Window with a View.” Sat 10/1.

* The Olmsted Historical Society’s Pumpkinville has an afternoon of fun planned, with wagon rides, an obstacle course, pony rides, crafts, live music, vendors, a corn roast and more. Sun 10/2.

When Matt Fish started Melt Bar and Grilled, he heard about a club that his favorite band had created: get a tattoo of the band, and get in free to any gig for life. Matt adapted it for Melt and posted his logo for his restaurant patrons to use as a template.

Ten years later, he’s got close to 800 hungry fans who have been tattooed with the Melt logo, earning themselves 25% off Melt food for life.

To celebrate, Matt threw them a party and offered- what else? More free food. The Melt Family Reunion recognizes just how crazy some people are for grilled cheese done right.
