Musicians from the Contemporary Youth Orchestra Show Off Their Composing Skills

Wed 4/22 @ 7PM

The Contemporary Youth Orchestra offers talented young musicians in junior and senior high school opportunities to perform in an orchestral setting with other young musicians and to work with contemporary composers as well as noted pop musicians.

CYO also has a program they can apply for called C Y We Write, where gifted student musicians can compose their own music for a chamber ensemble or arrange a piece under the mentorship of a professional musician.

This week some of the latest cohort of C Y We Write composers will have the opportunity to hear their pieces performed in a public setting by CYO musicians. That setting is the Happy Dog in Gordon Square, an adventurous rock club that often gives its stage over to unexpected programming.

This week audiences can hear the premieres of pieces by CYO members Jun Kim, Miles Hoehler and Rhys Serquina, Hoehler’s piece for string ensemble and piano is called “Respite Before Life.” Jun Kim’s “Iron Fugue” features two trumpets, French horn and trombone. And Serquina’s “Suite Dreams in Sea Major” was written for a quintet of two flutes, clarinet, bassoon and bass clarinet.

The program also includes student performances of music by other composers including Antonio Vivaldi, Sergei Prokofiev, and Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, among others.

The program is free and open to the public; no reservations are necessary.
