The Midwest Cactus and Succulent Society, founded in 1936 and based in northeast Ohio, promotes the cultivation of this huge and wildly disparate groups of plants, sharing and disseminating information about them. Both types of plants are equipped to survive in dry conditions, having evolved in different ways to store water. Between the two there are a few thousand variation; anyone who has seen a display of them, such as the one at Cleveland’s Rockfeller Greenhouse, has seen just a few of the variations.
The organization holds most of its monthly meetings at the Cleveland Botanical Garden which is where its annual show and sale will take place for two days this weekend, during CBG’s regular hours. This is a great opportunity to learn more about these plants and how to help them thrive in your home. There’ll be vendors there if you’re looking to purchase your own cacti and succulents and very likely supplies needed to grow them. Keep in mind this show is cash and checks only — no credit cards. It’s included with regular admission to CBG.
