Jazz Heritage Orchestra Pays Tribute to Herbie Hancock and Wayne Shorter

Sat 5/23 @ 8PM

A veritable army of some of Northeast Ohio’s best jazz musicians will be gathering at the BOP STOP this weekend under the banner of the Jazz Heritage Orchestra for a concert that will pay tribute to two legendary jazz musicians: sax player/composer Wayne Shorter (1933-2033) and 86-year-old pianist/composer Herbie Hancock. There will be 17 musicians onstage, including five saxophone players, four trumpet players (including Sean Jones, former artistic director of the Cleveland Jazz Orchestra), four trombone players, and a four-piece rhythm section that features Theron Brown on piano, Bobby Ferrazza on guitar, Glenn Holmes on bass and Chris Baker on drums. Dennis Reynolds serves as lead trumpet and music director.

The Jazz Heritage Orchestra was formed in 1998 at the Cleveland State University Black Studies department with Reynolds as artistic director to provide greater exposure to the music of great African American jazz artists through educational programs and performances. Its new home base is in Akron, while it does school visits, master classes, lectures and performances all over Northeast Ohio.
