True story: my college roommate once had a male suitor she wanted to discourage. She and I drove him off by singing the entire contents of a Mary Poppins songbook to him. Chim-chim-cher-ee!!!
The score of the 1964 Walt Disney movie, starring Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke, is ridiculously singable. Composed by the Sherman Brothers who wrote countless scores for Disney films and others including The Parent Trap (“Let’s get together, yeah yeah yeah”), The Aristocats, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, The Jungle Book, and many more, as well as the song “It’s a Small World (After All”), it contained such songs as “Feed the Birds,” “Sister Suffragette,” “A Spoonful of Sugar,” “Let’s Go Fly a Kite,” and, of course, “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious— I can still sing them all!
You’ll be singing too when you watch the film as preparation for the next session of The Musical Theater Project’s Movies at Home. As usual, start with the YouTube video posted by TMTP’s artistic director Bill Rdman telling you what to watch for when you watch the film. Then go online and watch it. Finally join Bill and other musical film buffs on Zoom to talk about what you saw. It’s free and all are welcome. Go here to get all the details.
