The Social Justice Institute at Case Western Reserve University, which still exists, despite attempts by state and federal politicians to ban “DEI” (diversity, equity and inclusion), which is literally SJI’s mission: to make sure all people have representation and equal opportunities to go as far as their talents and effort can take them.

The next event on SJI’s schedule is called “Social Justine in the Arts,” taking place at CWRU’s Tinkham Veale Center Ballroom. “We are excited to create a space of connection, education, and inspiration with an evening of artistic expressions.”

The centerpiece of the event is a jazz performance by Freedom First, an ensemble that features Spanish pianist Albert Marquès in collaboration with poet/spoken word artist/painter/activist/educator Keith LaMar who has been on death row in Ohio for nearly 30 years for a crime he did not commit. According to Marquès’ website, “At each Freedom First concert, LaMar performs live by phone from the Ohio State Penitentiary, melding his electrifying spoken word poetry with contemporary jazz played by a stellar group of international musicians.”

The event is free and open to all, but registration is required here. The CWRU Office of Government and Community Relations and the CWRU School of Law Social Justice Law Center are co-sponsors of the event.
