Contemporary Youth Orchestra Winds Down Its Season With Music Inspired by Asian Cultures

The Cleveland-based Contemporary Youth Orchestra, which gives talented teen musicians the opportunity to work in an orchestral setting with other young musicians and to work directly with contemporary classic composers as well as successful rock musicians to learn about composing and songwriting.

CYO’s final concert of the season is called “Written in Sound” and it focuses on music based on stories from Japan, China and Korea. It includes pieces from films Castle in the Sky, Howl’s Moving Castle, Kubo and the Two Strings, and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. They will also be giving just the second performance of a new work called Hangul, written by American composer Soon Hee Newhold for Gustav Dudamel’s farewell concert with the L.A. Philharmonic. In addition, they will be performing The Arutiunian Trumpet Concerto written by CYO member Andrew Saab, the winner of its annual Concerto Competition.
