Cleveland Arts Prize Awards Event Honors Four Creatives and Three Arts & Culture Supporters

Wed 10/22 @ 6:30PM

Once again, the 65-year-old Cleveland Arts Prize is honoring its annual awardees for (announced back in August) with a ceremony, taking place at the Mandel Theatre at the Tri-C East campus.

This year’s recipients for artistic excellence will all be familiar to local audiences. Poet Ali Black was awarded the early-career artists prize, with noted classical guitarist Jason Vieaux winning the mid-career prize, and widely exhibited visual artist Mark E. Howard given the Lifetime Achievement Award.

In addition to the artistic excellence prizes, CAP is also awarding special prizes, which typically go to people who have supported the arts or helped built cultural infrastructure without necessarily being artists themselves. Oddly, a special citation from the board of trustees is being awarded to noted architectural photographer, author and visual historian of Cleveland’s built landscape, Jennie Jones, now in her 90s, who certainly deserved an award for lifetime achievement.

The other special prizes are more typical. The Barbara S. Robinson Prize for the Advancement of the Arts is going to the Jack, Joseph and Morton Mandel Foundation for its extensive philanthropic support of arts and culture in the region. The Robert P. Bergman Prize is being awarded to Greg Peckham, who advocated for public art and urban design as executive director of LAND studio. And the Martha Joseph Prize for Distinguished Service to the Arts is being given to playwright/actor/educator Robin Pease as the founding artistic director of Kulture Kids, focusing on culturally diverse storytellers offering indigenous narratives.

Tickets to the awards event are available here.
