The Baseball Heritage Museum, located at League Park in Hough, is dedicating this holiday weekend to one of the former greats of the game, Larry Doby (1923-2003). Doby initially played in the Negro Leagues before becoming the second Black player (after Jackie Robinson) to break the color barrier in the major leagues (and the first in the American League) when he signed with the Cleveland Indians in 1947. His first game was July 5, 1947. He was also one of the two first Black players (along with Satchel Paige) to win a World Series when the Indians won in 1948 (those were the days!) He played with the team through 1955.
In addition to free admission all weekend, the museum will kick off its tribute with a program on Doby at the nearby Hough branch of the Cleveland Public Library Friday July 3 @ 6pm.
