As is their way, Apollo’s Fire, Cleveland’s baroque orchestra, brings their distinctive approach to a familiar piece of music. Mozart’s Requiem, composed in 1791, the year of his December death, was left unfinished, despite his best efforts. It was a time of unrest around the world including in the what was newly the United States.
Apollo’s Fire’s artistic director Jeannette Sorrell has crafted a program that weaves contemporary reflections written by Black composers into Mozart’s music. They include Damien Geter’s 2109 An African American Requiem, Jessie Montgomery’s 2020 Five Freedom Songs, and Eric Gould’s 1791: Requiem for the Ancestors, a world premiere.
In addition to the orchestra, the program features soprano Sonya Headlam, mezzo-soprano Guadalupe Paz, tenor Jacob Perry and bass-baritone Levin Deas, with soprano Elora Kares and the Apollo’s Singers.
They’ll perform at St. Bernard’s Church in Akron on Friday November 7 and at Severance Music Center on Saturday November 8. Get tickets here.
