As long as there is no more wildfire smog blanketing the area, the Akron Symphony Orchestra will be back outdoors for its annual series of concerts at various Summit Metro Parks locations.
You can catch them this Sunday at Goodyear Heights Metro Park where they’ll play an evening of pieces by 20th-century American composers that bridge classical music, pop and jazz, including Aaron Copland, Charles Ives, Scott Joplin and George Gershwin. Akron jazz/gospel/soul vocalist Stephanie Childers-White and Gospel Meets Symphony Choirmaster Jonathon Turner will be joining the orchestra for a concert that also features the return of the popular and cherished “Soap Box Derby Rag” by AOS’s associate conductor and conductor of the Akron Youth Symphony Eric Benjamin, honoring the longtime derby, held annually in Akron, going back nearly a century.
Bring your blanket or chair, and a picnic if you choose. Alcohol isn’t allowed.
On August 9, ASO will perform the same program at Firestone Park Community Center at 7:30pm. Both concerts are free.
