Wed 6/9-Sat 6/26
Things may not be totally normal this summer, but there’ll be a lot more events to choose from.
For instance, Chamberfest Cleveland, which was founded by retired Cleveland Orchestra clarinetist Franklin Cohen and his violinist daughter Diana, is making its return, with tons of music — 11 concerts taking place from June 9-June 26 — but all of it outdoors and free. They say that “in this unique season” they’re “allowing as many people as possible to experience the healing power of live music.”
The concerts kick off on Wednesday June 9 @ 7pm, with Legends by Antonín Dvořák, with Franklin Cohen on clarinet, Dimitri Murrath on viola and Shai Wosner on piano, Enrique Granados Sonata H. 127 with Diana Cohen on violin and Roman Rabinovich on piano; Paul Qiancko’s American Haiku featuring Murrath and cellist Zlatomir Fung; and Franz Schubert’s Trio No. 2 in E-flat major, performed by Fung, Wosner and violinist Liza Ferschtman.
“This festive grand re-opening program features all the glorious colors of chamber music, starting with Dvořák’s jaunty rhythms and subtle lyricism, and a lovely sonata filled with exotic flourishes,” they say. “Paul Wiancko describes his American Haiku as ‘a richly-textured duo that incorporates Appalachian fiddling, percussive patterns and Japanese folk-inspired melodies.’ Schubert’s piano trio, from the creator of some of the most sublime chamber music ever written, is an epic, exquisite tapestry of gorgeous melodies.”
While the concerts are free, reservations are required — social distancing and all that. Go here for complete festival information.
