The Grog Shop celebrates that busy club night, Thanksgiving Eve, by offering a triple play of up-and-coming Cleveland bands who came up rapidly to make a splash on the local scene.
The six-member Seafair (pictured) has one of the biggest and boldest sounds of any area band, with its rock & roll base augmented by cello and violin that drive is soaring music into the stratosphere. Fronted by keyboardist/vocalist Chayla Hope, the group’s been turning heads in town for the past two and a half years. They’re planning to kick off 2015 with a full-length release, their first new release since a pair of EPs in 2013. Meanwhile, they’ve posted a song “Discovery” online as a teaser.
These Knees grew out of singer/guitarist/songwriter Stephanie Trivison’s solo work, which just cried out for full-band treatment to fill out her deliriously melodic pop-rock tunes and hit-you-in-the-heart vocals. Her no-nonsense gamin stage presence ties the whole package together. Although the group formed in 2010, it was 2013’s The Young and the Bright that created a local buzz for them. And like Seafair, they have a new album in the pipeline for early 2015.
They’ll be joined by the Teddy Boys, who aren’t as well known yet — they formed barely two years ago —but may soon be. They’ve just released a six-song EP Black Hills, which shows a perhaps too-obvious affinity for early ’70 Rolling Stones, although they also veer off randomly into pop, earnest balladry, metal and punk. While they’re still grappling for coherence, there’s a lot of potential here.
