A Hero’s Journey

A Hero’s Journey

It’s kind of a game with us here at Cool Cleveland. How many cool people, places and events can we identify this week? Sometimes our heroes are hiding in plain sight. MLK Day is a good time to peek into some of those corners and see what’s lurking there. The Rock Hall, CMNH, the Maltz and others are free all day and hosting special programs. All to celebrate a hero.

Sculpture Center presents performance art related work, part of a year-long region-wide collaborative effort. The Nomads new instrumental release references our hometown. Bizdom & 20/30 Club team up to help reboot Cleveland with entrepreneurship. Big Box kicks off at CPT. Heroic efforts all.

Take the journey. Maybe you can be our next hero. –Thomas Mulready

Given its legacy of shrinking, Cleveland, and the Rust Belt, has issues.

The issues arose naturally, and relate to the fact things leave, or that so much has left. Particularly, when things leave, the mind — both the individual and the collective city mind — can get protective and restrictive.

Neediness arises. The smell of desperation ensues like a pall that can tend to hang over cities, influencing decision-making on all levels…

VIDEO: Sandy Touschner’s Dream Job
“Tri-C helped me get up and running.”

Although she already had a Masters degree, Sandy Touschner was downsized, and realized that she still had to keep her skills up to date. So she enrolled in Tri-C’s Health Information Technology program.

“They were just wonderful from the beginning. The Tri-C professionals just treated me so well. They welcomed me with open arms and just helped me get up and running.”

Now, she just took her mid-term, and she already has her dream job teaching medical records all over the country. “It’s something I’ve worked hard for all my life, and Tri-C has helped me get there.”

She’s enjoying a Tri-C Alumni & Friends event at a tailgate party before a recent Cleveland Browns game. And she digs being a member: “I got that bumper sticker in the mail, and I put it on my car.” Tri-C.edu/alumni

ROLDO: Is There Any Honesty Left in Cleveland Politics? Know how to stop all of this nonsense? Make the “job” of Councilman a $15K part-time contractual position with no pension, because in reality that’s all it needs to be…

Roldo – You said everything except what they did wrong. Yes, it was clumsy, but anyone who hits 65 can draw Social Security and a private pension and keep working. PERS participants have to jump through special hoops to do the same thing, but so what?…
